Types of driving licences in India
Learner’s Licence (LL)
A Learner’s Licence is the first mandatory step before applying for a permanent Driving Licence. It remains valid for 6 months (180 days). Applicants can apply for a permanent DL after completing 30 days from the date of LL issuance, provided the Learner’s Licence is still valid.
Permanent Driving Licence (DL) – Non-Transport
This licence is issued for private vehicles such as motorcycles and cars. The vehicle category depends on the class of licence selected during the application process.
Transport/Commercial Driving Licence
A Transport or Commercial Driving Licence is required for operating commercial, passenger, or goods vehicles. The application process generally involves stricter eligibility rules, additional documents, and medical fitness requirements.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
An International Driving Permit is issued to Indian residents who already possess a valid Indian Driving Licence. The IDP is usually valid for 12 months or until the expiry date of the existing Driving Licence, whichever comes earlier.
